Frequently asked questions
Everything people usually ask us — about the bar, the name, the search for a space, and how to get involved. Don't see yours here? Just get in touch.

Not yet. We are actively searching for the right permanent location in Munich and working through the financing, permits, and planning required to open it.
A suitable space must be approved for hospitality use, and the opening hours a bar needs, while also being well connected by public transport. We are now looking across Munich rather than limiting the search to one neighborhood.
Our goal is to open in early 2027, although the timing will depend on securing the right space and receiving the necessary approvals from the city. Until then, frau* will continue bringing the community together through pop-up events.
We will share confirmed location and opening updates through the website, newsletter, and social media.

Your support has funded the essential work required to turn frau* from an idea into an established business. This has included forming Frau Bar Gastro GmbH, registering the business, setting up its tax and accounting structure, obtaining legal assistance, securing the necessary insurance coverage, and advertising the search for suitable premises, including through newspaper ads.
Not all of the crowdfunding money has been spent. The remaining funds are held by the company and reserved for the continued development and opening of frau*.
The search for the right permanent location has taken longer than expected, but the project remains active. We take seriously the fact that this money came from our community and will continue to provide meaningful updates as the project progresses.

Your crowdfunding rewards are still valid.
The drink vouchers and VIP opening-party tickets have not yet been physically issued because the permanent location and opening date have not been confirmed. Sending them out years in advance would create a logistical problem, with vouchers and tickets likely to be misplaced before they could be used.
You do not need to keep track of a physical ticket in the meantime. Your reward is recorded with your crowdfunding contribution. Once the opening date is confirmed, eligible supporters will receive information about their vouchers or VIP event by email.
If your email address has changed since the campaign, please contact info@fraubar.de.

A lesbian bar is a social and cultural space where lesbian and queer women* are at the center of the room. From the lesbian nightlife of Weimar-era Berlin to Le Monocle in Paris, the Gateways Club in London, and the many lesbian bars that became institutions across the United States, these spaces have played an important role in queer history.
They offered women* something that was often difficult to find elsewhere: a public place to meet, build relationships, organize, celebrate, and simply exist openly.
frau* carries that history into a modern setting. It can be a café, a meeting place, a sports bar, an event venue, or a place to dance. What defines it is the community around which the space is built.
-
Munich has been without a permanent lesbian bar since Inges Karotte closed in 2012. Queer organizations, venues, and events remain vital, but a lesbian bar offers something distinct: an everyday place where lesbian and queer women* are the heart of the room.
Lesbian bars have long been places where community, culture, and history are made. They allow different generations to find one another, friendships and relationships to begin, and people to experience the rare ease of being surrounded by their peers.
Pop-up nights can create that feeling for an evening. frau* will give it a permanent home.

A safer space is one where people can relax and connect without harassment, discrimination, or unwanted attention. Racism, transphobia, homophobia, misogyny, ableism, sexual harassment, and disregard for personal boundaries will not be tolerated. Staff will take concerns seriously and intervene when needed.
Privacy is especially important in an international community. Some guests may not be out in every part of their lives or may come from places where being identified as queer carries serious consequences. Invasive photography is therefore out of the question. Photos or videos may be taken only with the prior consent of everyone identifiable in them, including people in the background. Permission to take a photo does not automatically include permission to post it online.
We will also manage capacity, consider accessibility, and use trained door staff when needed. For us, a safer space means clear expectations, practical precautions, and a meaningful response when concerns are raised.

frau* is centered on lesbian and queer women* while welcoming the wider FLINTA+ community. We recognize that lesbian spaces have not always made women* of color, trans people, and other marginalized members of our community feel equally included. That history matters deeply to us.
Our programming, partnerships, and community events will reflect a range of identities and experiences. As an internationally focused, English-friendly space, frau* will also welcome people who are new to Munich, do not speak fluent German, or have not yet found their community here.
Inclusion is an ongoing practice, and we will keep listening as the community grows.

FLINTA+ is a German-language acronym for women*, lesbians, intersex, nonbinary, trans, and agender people. These are distinct groups with different identities and experiences. The plus recognizes that no list can include everyone.
frau* describes itself as a lesbian bar because lesbian culture and history are at its heart. We also use FLINTA+ to make clear that the wider community is welcome. No acronym is perfect, and language continues to evolve, but FLINTA+ is widely understood in our local community.

For me, the name frau* is a feminist statement. It is simple and direct, and it tells anyone walking past exactly who is at the heart of this space. That matters because the name is meant to speak not only to our community but also to the wider city.
The asterisk reflects the intersectional feminism behind frau*. There is no single experience of being a woman*: Race, sexuality, gender identity, disability, class, and nationality all affect how we move through the world and whether we feel seen within a community. The asterisk keeps the word open to that complexity.
frau* is rooted in lesbian culture and centers lesbian and queer women*, while welcoming the wider FLINTA+ community. Not everyone under the FLINTA+ umbrella identifies as a woman*, and the name is not meant to suggest otherwise. That is why FLINTA+ appears throughout our messaging: I want there to be no doubt that this space is intentionally intersectional, feminist, and inclusive.
Once you are inside, the name should fade into the background. The people, the community, and the feeling of the space will define frau* far more than the word above the door. I know the name will not resonate with everyone, but no single word could capture the full diversity of the community we are building.
